As most people are aware, the Delta Variant (DV) of SARS-CoV-2 is the most dangerous to have emerged so far in the countless mutations which have formed in the on-going pandemic.

It is possible that the virus has now reached maximum infectivity in humans, but only time will make this determination. Fortunately, the best vaccines are still able to prevent severe symptoms in most people. This may not hold for some future variants, which could be the biggest concern. Some could certainly arise in the ever-increasing number of variants which are forming, or will form, in the billions of unvaccinated people throughout the world.

And with breakthrough infections in vaccinated people (and likely those previously infected), basically all the world's people can provide this virus with new opportunities to mutate. Getting vaccinated is the best way to limit this from happening. Sadly, there is too little vaccine for so many people. It could take years to bring this virus under control. There remains a possibility that it will also mutate into a less pathogenic form, like its cousins which cause mild cold-like infections. We can surely hope for this to occur.

For an excellent overview on DV, see the article published recently in Nature :
