on what basis doctor decides to perform one of the imaging methods (CT, fMRI etc)? Which sympyhoms suggest which method? I checked Wiki, but it is too generalized.

Unfortunately, your question is very general, so I can only give you a general answer. There are three main considerations in determining which diagnostic imaging to perform: what the doctor is looking for (this is based on the history and physical as well as other tests that have been done), what location and tissue type is involved (soft tissue, bone, pelvic organs), and what imaging research studies have shown most effective.

    FWIW,

Could you give me examples of diseases diagnosed with each of following methods:
    - PET
    - fMRI (MRI)
    - CT
I'd like to know something more than wiki says.

The majority of diseases actually diagnosed by imaging are bone fractures diagnosed by either plain xray or CT scan. Sometimes MRI is necessary for hairline fractures or stress fractures, especially of the wrist or foot bones.
CT scan can also diagnose pulmonary embolism and kidney stones.
PET scans are usually used to add information rather than actual diagnosis. For instance, someone with cancer, PET scans are used to find out if there are distant metastases that are too small to show up easily on CT scans.
