    Hello guys,

I've been smoking for 10 years now and I definitely plan to quit. My friend is selling me electronic cigarettes but I'm not quite sure if its safe. They say that it's definitely more safe than cigarettes because of the vapor that you "smoke". Any long term side effects when it comes to using electronic cigarettes?

    Thanks

Well, you have to remember that you're still getting nicotine, so the benefits are in the lung function area mainly.

The thing I dislike about them is that they maintain the smoking habit. Patches and gum have the advantage that you're eliminating the habits associated with the addiction, making the final step to giving up altogether a smaller one. And if you can't tolerate the withdrawal you go back to a patch not to smoking itself. No similar advantage for the e-cigarettes. AFAICS the only reason to go for the e-ciggies is to draw less attention to yourself in a family or workplace or social group that continues to smoke around you while you're trying to give it up.

I quit a couple of months ago, would suggest just forget the gimicks, do the cold turkey thing, ok you'll eat more but after a couple of weeks you'll be fine and won't have to then quit the electronic cigarettes, btw I did try one many months before I quit, they taste dodgy and you still want a cigarette afterwoods, honestly waste of money.

I have heard the electronic cigarettes are almost as bad for you as tobacco. I do not know if that is true, but I will research it and edit this post after finding the results. As I've been told, and have experienced (possibly contributing to why I had failed), the addiction to nicotine is secondary to the habit of smoking a cigarette. No matter how you try to supplement your addiction through alternative sources of nicotine - it is never the same as smoking a cigarette, and so that craving will never be satisfied so long as you have it.

Everyone who has successfully quit smoking has told me the same thing: Every once in a while the craving for a cigarette will return, but time after time it subsides and becomes less frequent. My father quit smoking about 8 years ago, and once or twice a year he still gets a craving. In my opinion, and experience, supplements do not make it any easier to quit - you may get your fix of nicotine, but it just isn't the same as a cigarette. The longer you try to appease the nicotine addiction, the longer you're going to want the cigarette. Then again, that's only in what I've heard and experience myself. I'd go with Cold Turkey. From person to person I'm sure different strategies may be more effective.

    Edit:

After reading a few articles, the consensus on the danger of E-Cigarettes is that they do indeed damage the lungs - though as damaging as tobacco is, in my opinion, doubtful. Another concern is that it is difficult to control the amount of nicotine placed in the cartridges, which could result in nicotine poisoning. Other issues regarding E-Cigarettes revolve around quality control, and an uncertainty of what else might be in the E-Cigarette cartridges.

For quit smoking electronic cigarettes is not so good for health because Electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices sometimes called as "e-cigarette". This contains cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals which make them tastes like conventional cigarettes.this chemicals turns into vapor which later be inhaled by the users.Furthermore, the Bureau of Food and Drug's Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis detected diethylene glycol, a colorless and odorless organic compound that is poisonous and viscous. Moreover, this device also detected with carcinogens including nitrosamines. Intake of these chemicals can cause cancer. Nitrosamines are said to enhance formation in a strongly acidic condition such as in the human stomach. Thus this supports a positive association with gastric cancer.

I'm not so sure about that sallyjoseph. The question isn't whether e-cigarettes release one or more nasty chemicals.

The issue is that cigarettes themselves release literally dozens of toxins - so what level of reduced delivery of toxins do we tolerate to release the harmful effects which would otherwise affect smokers? If we can delay harmful impacts by a measurable number of years, then we can increase the time span during which addicted smokers can persist with attempts to quit entirely without substantially increasing their risks of the worst effects.

So if cigarettes release say 100 known toxins and e-cigarettes release only 10% of that number/quantity, is it a better thing to grant or to deny the option to people who haven't yet succeeded in kicking the addiction?

Just stop cold turkey. Don't waste your money on gimmicks. If you go back smoking then stop again. If you keep stopping it will take longer to return to smoking each time and eventually you won't go back at all.
