Well first things first I'm new so hi to everyone. I was reading about Stem Cells and something came to mind and I was wondering what the posibilites were with this. So when it comes to cloning we are able to do more and more. I was just simply wondering if it would ever be possible to be able to clone stem cells from Embryonic Cells. If that was possible wouldn't that end all the controversy and make things much easier in the fight to legalize them (I'm unbiased one way or the other).

We already obtain stem cells from embryonic cells. Since those embryos are harvested as excess from IVF cycles, and are killed to provide the stem cells, this is controversial. Not rational, but most people appear to be somewhat irrational.

Once stem cells are harvested, they can be multiplied (or cloned, as you called it) in cell culture. A number of such lines currently exist and are being used in research.

A better approach would be to obtain stem cells from adult tissue, which would avoid the silly arguments. Sadly, we cannot quite do that yet, since embryonic stem cells appear still to be more useful.

okay thanks. That was exactly what I wanted to know. But the question I have is this. if we can clone them whats the problem. If we are just recreating the same thing over and over what is the harm?

No harm. The use of existing lines of stem cells is not really controversial, and continues without problem.

Personally I do not see any harm in harvesting new lines of stem cells, either. After all, those are embryos that are going to die anyway, so taking a few stem cells at the same time is, to me, quite ethical. But a lot of people fail to see it that way.
