CFL's emit UV radiation, but the levels are lower than sunlight, so I'm somewhat skeptical that they could contribute to cataract development, unless someone was flashing one in their eye close up.

I personally love how long they last, I rarely have to change light bulbs.

Maybe it wasn't three wishes. Maybe it was arrested.

"The amount of UV that escapes from the tube is minimal, since the phosphor absorbs much of it and the glass tube is opaque to most of the rest. Supposedly you receive as much UV from one hour's exposure to sunlight in November in New York City as you do from an entire year's exposure to a fluorescent tube. What's more, the ultraviolet light emitted by the tubes is mostly in the UVA range rather than the more dangerous UVB range."

    "What Causes Cataracts?
Aging is the single greatest risk factor for cataracts, as cumulative exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays over a lifetime appears to be a primary cause.
Exposure to radiation, including x-rays and microwaves, may promote cataracts.
Physical injury to or inflammation of the eye (for example, uveitis or iritis) may lead to cataracts.
The long-term use of corticosteroid drugs, hereditary factors, and birth defects may be contributing factors.
Cataracts may occur at a younger age in people with diabetes mellitus.

    Prevention of Cataracts
Wear sunglasses marked “general purpose” or “special purpose,” or those that indicate they block at least 95 percent of ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays."

People who simply don't like change (~conservatives, ~elderly) will magnify/invent the downside of any change. CFL's also contain mercury (but so do the circular fluorescents in Mom's kitchen and the straight, recessed ones in the kids' rec room downstairs). And then there's the attitude of the survivalists who will give up their incandescents when the commies pry them out of their dead, clenched fingers.

Imagine all the emoticons that will need changing?!

What the hell do liberals have to do with fast trains and wi-fi.

And did you ever read the article you posted, it says the chance of the bulb exploding is incredibly rare, and that there is a built in breaker that cuts off power to the bulb if the glass breaks, thus preventing the risk of fire. Also, incandescent light bulbs can explode too, this is caused by small cracks in the glass.

And the mercury levels are not a health risk, unless you're going to break 100s of bulbs and take a deep breath. Common, I'm sure more people get mercury poisoning from eating too much tuna.
