I work in the Biotech industry specifically mammalian cell biology. Can any one tell me when a cell line purchased under licence ceases to be subject to that licence agreement ? For example, if a cell line has genetic modifications and these are either reversed or circumvented so that the cell line no longer represents the original is it considerd a different cell line and therefore no longer covered by licence agreement ? How have people been able to patent cell lines that they acquired from elsewhere just because of altering the genetic characterisitcs ?
