Food body warns over red food colourant

The Food Safety Authority has issued a warning to Irish consumers over the illegal red food colourant, Sudan Red 1.

The authority says if they have products containing Sudan Red 1 they should either throw them out or return them to the shop where they purchased them.

The colourant is used to manufacture chilli powder.



A total of 39 food products currently available on the Irish market are implicated by the authority's warning.

The list of products includes some brands of Worcester sauce, pot noodles, hotpots and chilled and frozen ready meals.

Sudan Red 1, an industrial dye, has been banned as a food colourant throughout Europe since 2003 due to its carcinogenic properties.

this is only coming out now!!! god, i've been living of that type of food!!! for yers !

Everything's a carcinogen. I even read somewhere that we should all stop using deodorant because it is a carcinogen. We're all gonna die, and I will die happy with my Sudan Red colored chili.

there are additives in everything!!!!! i cant take it anymore!!! espcially msg! and GM emulsifiers and all sorts of others...did you know m&ms - my favourite - contain some titanium compound!! read the packet next time!! its crazy!

O.K just so you know. Cancer is constantly occuring inside the body. There are specific white blood cells called Cytotoxic T Cells tha do practically nothing but kill viral infested and cancerous cells. Anytime there is a mutation in a gene caused by whatever you can imagine it becomes cancerous. This happens all the time is is happening right now. A healthy individual (and I mean healthy) has no problem dealing with these cancerous cells.

Now I wouldn't recomend shooting yourself with gamma rays but, I'm just saying that it's no big deal with these foods. I hear penuts are carcinogens. If they were truly dangerous I would have died many years ago.

What bothers me is any addative. When I buy soymilk I want soymilk. Not some load of garbage like sweeteners and vitamins and other junk. If I wanted vitamins I would have bought them (same goes for the sweeteners). We are so obsesed with addditives it makes no sense. Why don't these additive lovers just make their own bowl of matrix goo with all the bodily needs. Then they wouldn't have to fill my food with extra stuff that I DON'T WANT!!!!

Well that's my opinion on additives.

That's too easy. Some things increase the risk of getting a harmful cancer, others don't. It may or may not be true that a healthy body can withstand more before developping a harmful cancer (that's a different discussion) but that healthy body will just as well get an increased chance after consumption of certain food.

Wow, here we go to probability. If you are not aware enough about your health that getting cancer is just a probablility than you are not healthy. What I am saying is that it's not like you just get cancer one day. "Sorry, you had bad statistics and now you have cancer". NO it's not like that (Oprah likes to think it is ). Statistics are based off of populations not individuals. What a carcagen would do is (as far as I know) cause genetic damage, likely because of some free radicals that may be part in its breakdown. For cancer to occure you have to be creating the cancer faster than you can fight it. Tumors are dangerous because the white blood cells can't get to the inner cells if the tumor is growing to fast.
