Inserting dirty needles into human skin is clearly an infection risk. Acupuncturists do not always use proper hygiene procedures, and needles may be re-used, or used without such basic procedures as cleaning and sterilising the site of the needle insertion, or sterilising the needle.

Various infections have been reported, and recnelty about 70 cases have been found of mycobacteriosis from acupuncture needles. These lead to skin ulcers and worse.

Is this not too big a price to pay for accepting a therapy that has no more than placebo effect?
