...the surface of the earth was exposed to the sun at arm's length for a fraction of a second. What would be the after-effects, if any? Would/could humans survive?

    :-D

how short of a fraction of a second? but generally, i'd say anything exposed wouldn't survive... The sun is basically a great big H-bomb.

Let's say...a tenth of a second. Big 'ole sunspot staring you in the face. 8) Or one one-hundredth of a second. Maybe you could survive that indoors?

and on top of that, what exactly is "at arms length"? there is no discernible boundries on the sun like there are on earth. the only boundries i can think of are temperature gradients.

Well, I'm glad that wouldn't happen!

But is your question in terms of us appearing on the sun for a fraction of a second, or the earth's surface turning into that of the sun? Because although both would kill us, they'd have different effects - (this is mainly referring to the effect the sun would have if it were just "turn up" on the earth's surface)...
