Thread: Idiocracy

Idiocracy is a movie made in 2006. It's a dark comedy, and the title should be self descriptive. I'm posting about this movie because of the messages it delivers.
The one I want to emphasize, is that if we don't turn things around with Eugenics, we're going to go straight to what this movie portrays.

Due to the content of this movie, it is believed Fox purposefully made a very limited release. As you can see in the "release issues" section of the wikipedia article, it was essentially held back because Fox didn't want to insult the only audience it gets.

    Important Note:
Because this movie was (in my opinion illegally) not released as normal, I think it would be satisfactory if I mentioned the availability on youtube or other sharing networks? It has scared me out of my hibernation, and into returning to my previous reading habits. I hope it will do the same to everyone that sees it.

Would the irony be that if we kept the 'breeding' in check of the 'dumb' masses the human species would go extinct because the 'intellectual elite' seems to have little interest in procreation?

That would be ironic. However it's definitely a much better ending than what is predicted by myself and Idiocracy (as well as many others), wouldn't you say?

I'll be the first to say, though, that it would be hilariously ironic.

    warning: opinions ahead!

There is probably a continuous line of the mob outbreeding the elite duting human history except in those social constructs where the ruler collects a harem or equivalent collection of alluring women with the intent to impregnate as many as possible. This system has popped up several times.

Otherwise, and nowadays the ruling and intellectual elite were/are mostly busy doing their ruling or spending time on their intellectual pursuits.

This has not caused a dip in intelligence levels till now. And some may postulate that there is a dip, but i have the distinct feeling that the dumbing down of society we are witnessing is purely cultural.

The pursuit of stupidity is currently seen as the highest goal achievable in modern society. These kind of cultural limiters on human behaviour must not be underestimated.

Based on the history of the mob outbreeding the elite and recent cultural ideals I am not convinced that we are currently going down the evolutionary path of stupidity. I am convinced we are heading down the path of cultural stupidity. No question about that.

Interestingly the human brain seemed to have undergone rapid evolution in the last few thousands of years. I forgot where the reference is. Might try to look it up at a later date. Might not.

The fact that the human brain is rapidly evolving doesn't mean of course we are getting smarter or stupider. It might just mean that the new style of human society, living in huge herds of sheeple, requires adaptations to the old brain.

intelligent people analyze rapidly....But deepth of analyze is the more important.

Scientists are intelligent ,politiciens too,in fact our leaders are really intelligent because their speed of analyze is great but they have not deepth in their analyse:And populations follow these men because it's in our nature to take decisions with our heart and not our mind:citizens of rich nations are responsible for their difficulties because they accept to be slave and they can't complain of this fact.

People think solutions are politic but solutions are technologies..
And it's like this since the beginning..

We are always searching solutions in politic and we wote always for the same and after that we are complaining for our own vote:The other choices would be to vote for extremists but they don't understand something too....There is a reason which is politiciens can't rule our problems with politic.

People prefer vote thirty times for a same party during 2 centuries even if it doesn't change something and they won't use these 2 centuries to lead searches in a technological revolution.

We need One centuries to change this world but in 5 or 6 centuries,we will vote for the same and nothing will have changed and we will have lost all this time for nothing:it's in human nature.

Wasn't that part of the basis for Brave New World?

whenever anyone advocates eugenic solutions i always wonder who will set the standards to separate hte dumb from the not-so-dumb ? a self-appointed elite ?

some people seem quite willing to replicate the Athenian type of democracy (supported by lots of slaves) provided they can be the aristocrat-philosopher

It is not evolutionarily normal for there to be huge jumps in any feature, eg it may have been an advantage for a finch to have a larger beak but if the beak was say twice as long as was "normal" it would be consideredlabnormak among its community and may not reproduce (or indeed so dramatc a hange may not be advantageous), even if over time a similar such species comes to exist.

I think a similar argument can be made for humans and IQ (if it is inherited!) too great an increase at any one time may not be an advantage for the individual but over time, there may be a gradual increase in the whole population (ironically this would never be noticeable as IQ is based on population average so this may well be a non-question that you are asking!)

And thus where I believe I'm not guilty. I view myself as far too flawed to be the eugenic standard for the world. While I think I'm fine at making just choices, a ruler I definitely am not. If I were to make one ruling choice, it would be to have someone much wiser put in place of the current president.

So perhaps, marnix, not everyone applies to the stereotype.

the golden rule about appointing rulers should be that it goes to the person who least wants the job

+ kick him out as soon as he starts getting a liking for it

In the Grange we used to say the position seeks the man. Sadly it never held true. I left because of leaders' desire for personal aggrandizement.

Which is another beauty of my situation. The person I know that would be qualified for the job doesn't want it because he knows it's impossible to change anything when raving mobs of stupid people are opposed to it.

While he provides a good point, I say appoint him anyway.
