Thread: The Doomsday Clock - 100 Seconds to Midnight, Again!

According to the keepers of the infamous Doomsday Clock, the world remains at 100 seconds til midnight for the third year in a row*. Surprising it did not get a little closer with all the crazy things going on.

With Putin and his activities, one would think they would have shaved off a few seconds at the very least.

Still, it is as close to midnight as it has ever been. Perhaps the mechanism will break, and no more time will tick off.

That could be wishful thinking, especially if one reads the news.

Sure hope this is a correct assessment. Putin certainly had interest for invading Ukraine in 2014, which was a war (1). So we do have past history to judge what he might do. No doubt you are right about Putin wanting to rattle NATO. It seems to be paying some rewards as not every country in the alliance is in lock-step.

The most important member in the E.U., Germany, is moderating its position. They do a lot of business with Russia, and are highly reliant on energy sources. Some experts on this issue believe Putin chose the depth of winter for this activity, to maximize the concern over any conflict. That is why the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is such a big issue (2).

One possible scenario is a limited incursion, with the Russians seizing a land bridge to the Crimea, which they surely want (3).

We should all hope that nothing like this happens. There is no telling what the end result of any invasion will be, considering the scale of any invasion, and the certain economic sanctions which would surely be used to punish Russia.
