    Evening folks,

Just wondering if anyone knows what created this effect on the mirror in the pictures attached please? I understand that mirrors naturally become distressed/foxed with age - the same effect can be made manually with household chemicals like bleach, acid etc - but the effect in the attached pictures seem to be on the extreme end of the spectrum and I canít find any information online on what caused this effect or even how it could be achieved manually/scientifically, if even possible? It appears to have become extremely oxidised (if thatís the correct term) naturally over time but any help in regards to the science behind this would be much appreciated.

    Much thanks,

    Dan

Is the staining on the outside surface of the mirror or the "back side"?

As a chemist it looks like the silver behind the mirror (old type mirrors have a thin layer of silver on the back of the glass to increase reflectivity) has been exposed to air and water and has oxidized.
