South Korea has successfully contained the coronavirus, primarily by widespread testing. Why aren't other countries able to do it? U.S. seems to be the worst!

Sanjay Gupta on CNN has just said that they acted early.
He also mentioned Singapour and Hong Kong.

I don't know if that is right but I think he answered your question.

Because widespread testing = high numbers of virus cases. Our president doesn't want there to be high numbers of cases, so no widespread testing accomplishes that.

First cases in U.S. and South Korea were about the same time (~ Jan. 10) - doesn't excuse U.S. delay.

Do ventilators save lives or are they required to make inevitable death more humane?
All that belongs to human understanding, in this deep ignorance and obscurity, is to be skeptical, or at least cautious; and not to admit of any hypothesis, whatsoever; much less, of any which is supported by no appearance of probability...Hume

(I am no medical). It appears that people (most people) recover because their immune systems figure out what to do. Putting someone on a ventilator buys time for that immune system to work, so I guess it has value
