I have visited Science Forum for quite a while now. This is the slowest I have ever seen on this site. There seems to be only like one poster of commenter per day. Hardly any new posts for the Duck to argue with. Is this site about to close down? Hope not.

Why don't you make more posts, even if they end up in Trash.
    I've just made two.
When I joined in 2009 there was no Duck and it was very busy.
I feel sure he's driven some people away.

I dont feel the duck has any major part in it. The loss of the major traffic was do to the chaos after Bunson & Beaker, harold going rogue, and then the subsequent decrepitude of the website itself for months at a time when it was totally offline.

I agree. In fact IMO the Duck is one of the things that makes this forum better than others I have frequented. If he HAS driven anyone away it's because their bullshit got what it deserved. That is a good thing. I would rather have a quiet forum that an unmoderated shit pit.

The duck and the demon. Sounds like a horror story. Between them they have definitely driven a lot of people away.
I'm not sure what satisfaction they get by name calling, and they back each other up.

Look on the bright side. If the forum were livelier, you would have been banned already, as I expect you have been elsewhere.

This thread isn't even about the Duck. This about Forum inactivity. The Duck is just a Common Idiot. This isn't even about that other one. Cause he is just an Idiot Chemist. Infinitely more valuable to a Forum. The forum lately seems to have been abandoned. I usually read it everyday until recently. Now I have actually had to sign up to ask why. Science should be a normal thing for people. A good Science Forum helps that.

Someone who has done nothing but post utter drivel isn't really in a position to call others idiots.

The reasons for the forum being a bit quiet was explained by Paleoichneum.

There are plenty of other science forums out there if you don't like this one. Some are busier. Some are more specialised. Most don't have as much patience with people posting nonsense as this one does. So you would have to be careful.

That is strange, considering my average posts per day are 0.40 and yours are 5.88.
I've seen you on other forums as well. You must be addicted.
The only other one I participate on is a golf forum. In 3 years I've made 200 posts, while some on there have made over 50,000.

So, why am I still here? Because it was good to me when I first joined. I asked questions and received good answers.

Most that was in the past (when I had a really horrid job). I don't post here so much now.

But, more to the point, I am not the one complaining about the standards of moderation.

Groucho Marx used to say that he wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have him as a member. I think that a great many of the people "driven away" belong in this category, but unlike Groucho, just don't have the ability to recognize it.

And too many who insist on staying with a club that doesn't want them.

Always found that anywhere in life there are people you get on with and people you don't.
All you have to do is try as much as possible to avoid the wrong people, or if possible make them your friends.
But also in life there are predators who will jump on prey. The duck, the demon, the wasp are good examples here.

I wouldn't say they are predators, I would say that they just don't entertain bullshit... You don't entertain bullshit when it comes to religious bullshit, a big difference between them and you though is that you seem willing to entertain other non-religion based bullshit whereas they won't. If you would take the skepticism that you employ towards religion and employ it towards all woo and other pseudoscience BS, then you would be a lot better off.

I acknowledge that not all religion is bullshit. If it's a comfort to you then that's okay. Religions attack other beliefs, and they attack science.
Plenty of religious people regard Big Bang cosmology as bullshit. That's why they are fair game to me as I like alternatives.
The problem with some people here is they descend like vultures but do not raise their own threads for discussion. They must be know-alls.

What does that mean? Isn't pointing out the errors in someone's crackpot theory a form of discussion? One would assume the reason they post their theories is to have people discuss them (and point out the errors).

Although it seems that many are just looking for people to fall down in a faint at how brilliant their idea is.

You could probably argue that I'm one of those vultures as well since I rarely create my own threads, however it's not because I'm a know-all. It's just that I have limited time, and it's easier to add to already existing discussion than it is to create a new discussion topic. Why judge someone for not creating new discussion threads when they contribute in other threads?

Probably, but remember they laughed at Einstein and the Wright Brothers.

What would happen if someone advanced these ideas?

Life on Earth is sustained by dust from comets.
Alchemy and magic are for real.

    You'd be laughing at Newton.

Except that, so far as I am aware, nobody laughed at Einstein, at least nobody in the physics community.

They also laughed at Bozo the Clown. (Even if your claim were true.)

So, what is more likely: someone with no basic knowledge of physics has come up with a breakthrough, or they are just writing random collections of words.

Alchemy and magic are for real.

    You'd be laughing at Newton.
In that context, yes. And why not? Just because he was Newton doesn't mean that everything he said was worth taking seriously.
