Book of Kings says the northern kingdom, lost to the Assyrians, consisted of ten tribes. A close reading of earlier books (Joshua and Judges) indicates the tribe of Simeon had been absorbed into Judah, so that by the time of the kingdom there were only a total of at most eleven tribes, Judah (including Simeon) and Benjamin for the south and the rest (nine) for the north. Why hasn't history straightened this out?

I think it may be something to do with the disappearance of the Lost Tribe of the Wherethefuckarewe.

It would involve the bible not being a book of cherry picked stories from the bronze age.

My question has less to do with revising the book of kings, but rather current opinion seems to prefer ten, even though it is wrong.

Is it something that to do with the tribe of Joseph being split into Ephraim and Menassah?

The split of the tribe of Joseph brought the total back to 12 because Levi was no longer counted, since they became the priest tribe (Moses and Aaron). Levi and Simeon not receiving land was supposed to be the curse of these two by Jacob because they committed mass murder..
