I`ve experienced this time after time: I am researching some subject that interests me. Google directs me to some pubmed study that seems to cover the subject that I am reading up on. BUT in order to read the damn thing I have to pay like 40 bucks! Even if the study is 10-20 years old. I mean, shouldnt knowledge become common property at some time. Who is it that is making money from all the research being done? Is there some way to get around it?

Email the corresponding author (the email address is usually under the author list). Most academics would be happy to email you a copy if you explain why you want it.

Very limited distribution, so no economies of scale.

When Newsweek pays an author $20,000 for an article, they can spread that over 1.5 million copies; every person who buys a copy pays 1.3 cents to read that article.

When a niche journal on anodization processes gets all their articles submitted for free, then pays an editor $10,000 for a month to organize it and a printer $10,000 to print 500 copies, each copy is going to cost $40.

Generally no one; there's not much money in research publications.
