I was thinking about the aspect of austerity and which corners of expenses on the public purse or in the way of funding it has yet to attack.

Are there any subjects (in science) that you feel are a waste of time and expense to pursue?

Science funding is very competitive, if you can't make a strong case for why the research should be done1 you don't get any money. Waste of time projects do not get funded (despite what you read in the tabloids)...

    1. Even if you do make a strong case you still may not get the funding.
