As a civilisation in the 21st Century we still have a problem with our understanding of time. In order to help me to get my mind around the problem of time I set about putting my thoughts down on paper. OK, in an electronic file.
Before life on earth there was no eyes to translate the suns reflected radio waves into light and dark. However, as the earth rotated, one half of the earth was not bathed in radio waves and one half was. On the half of the earth that was bathed with radio waves there were obstacles, in the way of radio waves, which caused a reduction in the density of the radio waves and caused a radio wave shadow. This scenario was maintained for billions of years.
With each rotation of the World around its own axis and, also, its rotation around the Suns axis, life, as we understand it, began to take hold. But it would take billions of revolutions of the earth around the Suns axis and even more billions of revolutions around its own axis before the first seeing eye was to develop in primitive life. We can say that these two movements were made and could be measured as total radians completed relative to each other but without any other yardstick the “time” elapsed to make the total radians for each could not be considered
However, the first seeing eye, by a miracle of evolution, developed and later the first human being developed eye site. Accordingly, the first humans were able to appreciate darkness and light as the World revolved around its own axis. They could also appreciate that shadows were formed which changed with the angle that the sun made with the earth.
Over thousands of years the recording of day and night as a way of measuring our position in a day and the use of sun dials soon became inadequate and Egyptian scholars of the day broke the earth’s rotation into 24 sectors. The same scholars had worked out that the earth rotated +/-365 times around the sun to basically arrive at the same position.
The scholars then broke the 24 sectors into much small fractions. Accordingly, the scholars introduced the hour, the minute; and the second into our understanding. These basic elements were named units of time.
With the continued development of man’s understanding of the World, civilisation became used to using the terms distance, height and width This gave way to the understanding of 2 dimensional and then 3 dimensional configurations of matter on the earth and in space. Also, tied into the use of 2 and 3 dimensions a fourth dimension of time was introduced through the work of the scholars. Taking a simple example a bus going from the bottom of a valley to the top will move through a horizontal distance x , through a depth distance z and through a height distance Y. This movement does not take place instantaneously but over the course of a period we understand as time. We understand it in hours minutes and seconds but it could be equally understood as radians through which the earth has rotated whilst the bus did the journey. Also in the same period is could be understood as the fraction of a radian that has been made of the earth around the sun. There two measured radians would be completely different but valid means of measuring the period elapsed
These 4 dimensions we use every day. We understand that it will take a number of hours to walk from London to Bath. We have got used to speed as the number of miles that we can travel in a given time e.g. 30 miles per hour. However, when we start to question what is “time” we have a problem. Of course, we have all grown up knowing, if not in detail, the approximate date of our birth. In my case that was 1941 and today in 2014 that makes me 73 years of age. However, if we go back to the origin of time measurement what this actually means is that I have made 73 revolutions around the sun and 73 x 365 revolutions around the axis of the World.
What civilisation has brought about is a convenient way of measuring time as a method of ordering our society and then extrapolating that understanding to encompass the universe.
Take an example of travelling from London to Bogota. Neglecting that the earth is rotating for this example when we are in London, the point in space that is Bogota is +/-5000 miles away. Should we step on board a commercial aircraft and set of for Bogota the flight will take +/- 10 hours. What we are not considering is that our target point of Bogota could be moving away from us at 60.000 miles per hour. That is the Earth’s speed around the sun. This is compensated for the fact our commercial airliner is also travelling at 60000 mph within the earths envelope, plus 500 mph over ground/
If we now remove the Earths effect and have London and Bogota just two points in space what speed will out commercial airliner have to make to complete the journey in 10 hours assuming the commercial airliner can only boost its speed to 60500 mph.
This is a conundrum, along with other conundrums which can only be resolved by going back to the time before the scholars gave us days, hours, minutes and seconds and measuring in a different way.
In the paragraph above I wrote. “The same scholars had worked out that the earth rotated +/-365 times around the sun to basically arrive at the same position.” However, scientists have proven that our Solar system is not fixed in space and is moving at high speed relative to other systems which are also moving at high speed in relation to other systems. It seems we have no fixed point to make reference to and we now understand that every particle in the universe is constantly changing position relative to every other particle.
The only fact it would seem is that ever particle is rotating around its own axis and every mass of particles are revolving around another mass.
It would seem that the only measurement we can use is that of radians or portions of a radian to compare each. This in effect will produce a ratio of rates of spin and if we apply calculus we can slow the whole universe to zero
If we go back to our London to Bogota journey our over ground distance measured as a fraction of the radian around the sun is one figure, whilst the radians travelled by the earth in the same period (of time) is another.
So whilst we have the Earth conveniently rotating around its own axis we can assume that the Earth’s circumference/ diameter radians of revolution will bring us back to our original point relative to the earth’s axis but revolving around the sun for +/- 365 revolutions will not bring us back into the same point in space i.e. the definition of a year will be compromised
Now, let us take an extreme view and take the sun and moon and all the other plants out of our system leaving just the Earth to travel a straight line and it is not rotating .What would we measure time against. Now take all the other visible stars out of the sky. We would not now exist, of course, but let us assume we can and our leaders have told us that looking from where we came from and looking to where we are heading there are no visible or un-visible signs to show how long we have been travelling this route or how long we may be travelling this route and as we have nothing to give us a measurement of a day or a year we have no way of explaining “time” on our journey.
    Conclusion.
Change is time, time is change.

    Its the way nature is!

Balderdash! There's many ways to know how long humans have been on Earth and how old the Earth is. We also know when our solar system was created and also when the universe was formed. Why come here and say such nonsense?
