Why has the 'LIKE' button not been repaired. Restored. Replaced..
~ I recall a little news input from FaceBook regarding a security challenge through the 'Like' feature..
Yet it NEVER went away.. 'They' simply fixed it. Patched the glitch.. Please restore your 'Like' feature.
It is obvious to me that I am not alone in wanting the 'LIKE' back how it was...
~~ PLEASE FIX THIS. ~~ ( or get someone else to.).

There's no point in starting new threads about this. It's not helping.

I am not a administrator here.. I can not access the required controls screen to make good the 'like' ..
' It does not help.' Is not a answer worth printing.. I have reported, and started a thread.. What and why is the problem.. not fixed.
I am not alone in wanting the like restored... It was popular.. and used often.. Are you telling me that 'they' are so dis interested as to not fix what should be.. ? That's pathetic. This is pathetic.. " there's no point " Yea~Right.

~ " PLEASE REPAIR The LIKE BUTTON." Does not seem such a unreasonable request.. make it right.

I prefer to have the button turned off actually. It was being used as a form of bullying before.

~ I like that, but do not agree..

I too have witnessed some bullies on these forums..
I do not respond to them..that gets them every time..

I do not understand you not liking the like.. I like to be noticed.. and liked..
and never did see any down side of being or not being liked..

I haven't seen you at the receiving end of a dozen detractors either. It is when you are trying to make a stand and there are heaps against you and they all "like" the fact that you are getting a hiding. Try it sometime!

Stop whinging, the responses you get (and the fact others agree with and "like" them) are your own fault, if you weren't such a loony bullshitter you wouldn't be treated like one

~~ Aagh, now we see the problem. "They like it that I am getting a hiding..." you said; Each time that has happened did you not consider to adjust your stance so as not to invite such wrath..
We can not always expect that others will see our view or agree with a attitude or point.. I have never evoked a like that did not please me.. That you feel bullied for such as like's is itself a 'Roberttybob 1.' issue..
~ Do not condemn the 'Like' for your interpretation of intent.. Liking is not always a sign of agreement but it is a 'Like' just the same..
You have slurred my wanting of the repair or re in statement of the like button with a personal view that is all of your own doing..
    I do not like that..
I return to my point; ~ Please Repair The LIKE Button. Because some things are to be liked.. That you replied, I like.

The "Like" button helped me navigate to threads that might have had a response to one of my posts. I thought it was quite practical.

I agree. I also used it as a navigation feature to continue dialogues which I found both informative and interesting. It allowed me to make better use of time restraints by prioritizing my areas of response without having to search through all new posts.

look, i don't know if you guys believe us when we say that none of us (apart from the site owner) are in a position to fix the like button
and somehow i get the feeling that our site owner hasn't got all that much interest in our day-to-day affairs

have a look at the admin user account : Last Activity July 14th, 2014 07:01 PM; Last Post April 23rd, 2014, 03:46 PM (that's when we had the fake admin inserts / deletes)

not exactly finger on the pulse, is it ?

It was around the time that I complained about the unfair use of the like button that Admin stopped it. Whether it was related we will never know.

I completely believe that none of the moderators has access at the needed level. Any continued dialogue is for the benefit of whoever DOES have that authority. I have personally been concerned that all is well with ADMIN, more so than if they are running some form of an on-line experiment. The different forums that I belong to have various means of recognition and one of them does not have a 'like' button while others have 'reputation' scales. I suppose a purely academic forum might not want such a device in which case I imagine the demographics of who is posting or reading might well undergo restructure.

It just seems mysterious that this happened at this forum. I rather suspect some mischief on the part of a hacker but it is equally disconcerting that the parties who own this domain have not seen fit to speak to it or redress it. That they seem not to have communicated with their moderating staff is doubly concerning. No reflection at all on those of you who have openly acknowledged this thread and your limitations to access the feature.

Not that surprising to me. It happens. People lose interest. It probably didn't turn out to be as much fun as he thought it would.

Why have you taken this one sentence out of the paragraph? It then loses context. It is mysterious to me that this forum, which hitherto seemed one of the best for ADMIN and moderation communication to it's membership, quite suddenly loses touch with ADMIN when faced with this 'intervention', if I might call it that. If I recall correctly, the hacker was insinuating themselves under the name of ADMIN. Perhaps they have effectively locked ADMIN out of their own forum? Still, I would expect that at least some of the moderators and ADMIN had each others' email and/or phone number as backup communications.

This virtual world is all very interesting. In 'the real world' we would have gotten to the bottom of a mystery like this, in my opinion.

I have no idea how forums work behind the scenes, but I don't hear a lot in the way of positive comments regarding the administration of this site (beyond the mods, who are a very active and helpful juxtaposition).

What you have not understood is that there is no one reading this thread who can fix the like button.

I saw that remark when it was first said... weeks ago.. That is NOT a response. It's a excuse. Then as a 'Moderator find a 'mr fix it'.. and fix it.. or get it fixed.. and talk with us.. not at us.

My fault! I doubt it but put the blame on those who were abusing its use. Was Admin John Galt or whoever was behind John Galt?

~ With some intent obvious you are being divisive.. I am not a administrator at this site..not even a moderator.. I have asked and reported and demanded a explanation.. So the admins team are not available or cant be contacted or.. don't care.. That's not my problem is it.. ? I do not have the knowledge to hack this admin level to this site.. and wouldn't if I could.. It's a stupid thing to say.. what are you doing ?
Why are you being so aggressive ? I do not 'LIKE' that.. Can you contact a administrator of this site ? Please. I have clearly asked and stated..

Nope, not being divisive. I am only pointing out that I have exactly the same excuse you have. The like button option is not on my admin control panel.
I have asked and reported and demanded a explanation.. So the admins team are not available or cant be contacted or.. don't care.. That's not my problem is it.. ?

No, I cannot contact the administrator of this site, unless he chooses to read his PMs. Why are you being aggressive?

My point is well made.. I would like the re in statement of the 'like' button.. and I knew you could not do it.. cos you said that some time ago.. It's NOT you I am talking with. That you come and replied.. thanks. but the admins or manager of site.. needs a kick start.
So it's broken or disabled.. get it fixed please... You told me I have bad comprehension.. yet you do not seem able to act for or on behalf of.. My understanding was pages ahead of yours.. it would seem. The forum is broken, repair it.
I am not being angry, or biter, I just want for a better result than 'we can not fix it' someone must.

Write a personal message to Admin and see if you get a response then. [ I think this is what Harold was suggesting you do.]

Unfortunately nobody currently with access to TheScienceForum has the ability to fix whatever is wrong with the Like button, otherwise I'm sure it would have been corrected weeks ago.

I can only imagine that the moderators on here are just as eager to have full site functionality back as you or I.

From what I gather the "Admin" account is the only one able to fix the issue and the only person with access to that account is absent for reasons unknown.

You would think, if you have a site, you take care of it.

The LIKE BUTTON is a very important aspect of this Forum. It invigorates futher conversations and discussion.

    IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED.

If the ADMIN doesn't care then give the site to someone who DOES!

I have seen this in other places.

I have a room *chat room*

    I take care of it.

Problem....I deal with it or find out how to.

    It's part of ownership.

MODERATOR NOTE : Ok everyone, here is the situation, in plain text : there is currently an issue with the forum software in that the "Like" button is not functioning. This issue is unrelated to any of the settings available in the appropriate control panels of both moderators and administrators; the only person who has direct access to the configuration files of the vBulletin software on the servers is the Site Admin, so he is the only person who can fix this for us. Unfortunately, the Site Admin has not been around ( i.e. logged on ) since 14th July, and has not read or responded to any of the numerous messages that the members of the mod and admin team have sent him. We are desperately trying to get hold of him, not just because of the Like button on here, but also to sort out far more serious issues over on ThePhysicsForum, which is basically crippled at present due to non-functioning "Reply" and "Edit" screens, and a host of other problems.

So, to make a long story short - yes, we - the members of the mod and admin team - do care about this, and yes, we do everything we can to have this sorted. There is no conspiracy here, and the Likes were not disabled or turned off on purpose - it is a technical issue within the forum software. The problem we are having is quite simply that we have bee unable to make contact with the Site Admin for the past month, and do not know why he is absent or when he will return. We apologise for the inconvenience, yet all of you have to realise that accusing us of not caring is silly, since this situation is entirely out of our control. None of us has access to the servers this forum is hosted on, and none of us are paid members of staff of the company who owns this site. We are in the exact same position as you are. We will continue our attempts to reach the Site Admin or at least find out why he is absent, but please understand that this is all that we can do at present.

Thank you for your patience, and again our apologies for this inconvenience.

Thanks Markus. You're so much more diplomatic than I am.

I'd also like to point out that it doesn't make a lot of sense to get ticked off at "Admin." None of us knows what he has going on in his life. We are also guests here, and non-paying guests at that. I don't think he is making any money off of this. The ads defray some of the cost of operation, that's about it.

    Nobody "likes" him.

I "like" him just fine. He's giving us a free forum where we can post our drivel to our heart's content.
