Alan Gross "plans to end his life," says lawyer of American jailed in Cuba

Gross was arrested in 2009 while working to set up unauthorized Internet networks for the island's Jewish community on a contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development, a government entity.

He says his activities were no threat to Cuba. But Havana considers such programs an affront to its sovereignty, and Gross was convicted under a statute governing crimes against the state.

Cuba has made clear it wants to work out a solution involving three intelligence agents serving long prison terms in the United States on spy-related charges.

So why not just do a one for one trade?

It is time USA and Cuba normalized relations full stop. I find it so ridiculous to have this ongoing problem at your doorstep. What is the issue now?

So what's the issue here. It was unauthorized and the US, an enemy, was paying to do it anyhow. Being arrested was an expected result.

Imagine a reverse situation, an unapproved, Cuban backed network or radio tower going up in Atlanta--and lets see if there wouldn't be a strong disproportionate response from the Feds.

Just trade one for one with Cuba.

Would cuba go for that?
If the US knew the risk they should have planned for it and had a plan.
Hopefully Alan went on the job with full disclosure

Assuming Cuba would go for that. But why would they? Cuba I'm sure knows the middle east got 5 for 1. Why shouldn't Cuba get that deal to?

Two different scenarios.

Does Cuba care? This is politics, sir. Nobody plays fair.

It's sad that people are sticking up for Cuba throwing people in jail for connecting people to the internet.

My comments were more general and not looking at the specifics of the case concerned. For a long time I have been wanting to see some sort of normalisation of the relationship between USA and Cuba. So I don't think I'm sticking up for Cuba.

I wasn't referring to you, specifically, Robittybob. One of the comments on the CBS site said the guy got what he deserved for subversive activities. What the hell is the matter with these people???

OK I have looked at a few YT on the topic, and all I can say is "Cuba let Alan Gross go. Please."

If he "decides" to kill "himself" then America won't need to release any of their captured Cuban spies.

I'm sure they completely have only his best interests at heart and understand how suspicious an "accident" would look.

That is beyond callous. My sympathies are certainly with him, his family and his intentions (pre jail). I don't think a prisoner swap would be as easy as Cosmic thinks. It'd be nice if it was
