I think scientists (e.g. neurologists, psychologists, etc.) who study the brain and the human mind would be surprised to hear this.

      so what is it?
There is no easy answer. There are many forms of mental problems with many different causes.

Well I've looked into it a bit and I haven't found anything, so if you do please share. Also, I think you're right about that, but what kind of forms? You mean like dementia?

One reason you might have found nothing useful about "insanity" is that it's not a technical term.

If you looked for other terms you might do better. Even then, you might have to rethink what you're looking for.

When we say conversationally, "That's insane!" we could be talking about something as mild as a surprising or wrong or silly statement or behaviour. We might be adults looking at an adolescent's ill-judged and dangerous risk-taking. We could be looking at the behaviour of someone with OCD locking their front door ten times. Or we could be looking at someone suffering from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia when they're in the midst of a florid episode. Then there are dementing older people who pour the boiling water into the sugar bowl rather than the teapot.

These are all signs of specific kinds of disordered thinking and behaviour which might be called insanity by a non-professional person, but someone who knows about mental health and ill-health would identify correctly.
