Not so strange as it seems. In my lifetime the reverse was inconceivable. When computers were first discussed on the television programs they were amazing but there was no realisation that they could ever become really powerful.

    Similarly with the internet.

In a generation or so I suspect that the idea of life without them will be unthinkable.

As we are the last people in history who can still conceive of a future without them what does anyone think the world would look like now (or in the future ) without these developments having become so all encompassing?

Personally I remember that there were amazing developments aside from them (the internet and computers) and the world was set on a high speed development anyway but the result would have been completely different.

This is a bit like futurology in reverse!

By the way does anyone know of a forum dedicated to the effects of the internet per se?

not true. since the 1930s 1940s science fiction authors have written about computers advancing to the level of human thought. also movies were made. i am sure that scientists and engineers who worked on first computers were very much aware of potential. maybe the shrinking of size wasn't forseen. they probably assumed computers would become more powerful by increasing size.

I disagree (I mean everything took off quite recently to my mind) but my question is what might have happened if computers and internet technology had not developed as they did.

Go back just a few decades and it was not at all obvious what would follow.

i think internet was not forseen but maybe it was. i really do not know. but computer capabilities have been proposed, at least in scince fiction.. even tv science fiction, Star Trek, assumed computer capability and attachment to it by all.
