Hi all. Have just lost 9lbs on a diet but wondered where that 9lbs has gone? Is the planet 9lbs lighter now? Hope this makes sense!

No, the planet is not lighter, the molecules that were once part of your body have been metabolised/broken down and the products excreted/exhaled.

Don't worry. Those 9 lbs were found and kept by an anonymous lady in Indianapolis.

The ultimate breakdown product of organic compunds in your body is CO2. This is why exhaled air contains more CO2 than the air you inhale.

Most of it would be water also. A person is born with a set number of fat cells, but if the person consumes much more than he uses for an extended period of time, fat cells start to multiply and they don't reduce in number again after that. Fat cells grow and shrink in fat content as your energy intake varies.

Congratulations! weight loss can be difficult in the modern world.

Although solids as nitrogen urea and metallic salts are excreted in the urine and through the skin, most of your weight loss was water. Within fat cells triglycerides and fatty esters are suspended and metabolically active through the universal solvent: water. When fat is broken down and the solids are excreted, that extra water is no longer needed. Viola! weight loss!

Typically you lose several pounds of water every day just by breathing so stay hydrated, the excess is excreted as urine.
