Giant sunspot AR1944 has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for potent Earth-directed eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of M-class flares and a 30% chance of X-flares on Jan. 6th.

An X-class flare can cause widespread power outages and interrupt communications, so FYI.

We have been experiencing a number of power bumps (very brief interruptions of mere seconds duration or less) in the last few days but so far, none as yet today. I wonder if solar flares have been responsible for any of that? Power interruptions are quite frequent in the Yukon, so we pretty much expect them as normal operational difficulties, lol, and the reason that I have redundancies built into our heating system and other household neccessities.

Cool. I'll be watching for northern lights. That's an extremely rare sight from my city at 49 degrees north.
