At one time, most of my friends could hear the bell
But as years passed, it fell silent for all of them.
Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound.
Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me,
As it does for all who truly believe.

The Red Bull could not see him, and would kill him without ever knowing that he had been in the way. Wonder and love and great sorrow shook Schmendrick the Magician then, and came together inside him, and filled him, filled him until he felt himself brimming and flowing with something that was none of these. He did not believe it, but it came to him anyway, as it had touched him twice before and left him more barren than he had been. This time, there was too much of it for him to hold: it spilled through his skin, sprang from his fingers and toes, welled up equally in his eyes and his hair and the hollows of his shoulders. There was too much to hold, too much ever to use; and still he found himself weeping with the pain of his impossible greed. He thought, or said, or sang, "I did not know that I was so empty, to be so full".

What is plucked will grow again
    What is slain lives on
What is stolen will remain --
    What is gone is gone.

What is sea-born dies on land
    Soft is trod upon
What is given burns the hand --
    What is gone is gone.

Here is there, and high is low
    All may be undone
What is true, not two men know --
    What is gone, is gone.

Who has choices need not choose
    We must, who have none
We can love but what we loose --
    What is gone is gone.

I’ll take this little moment here to jump in and say a good ald Happy Christmas to everyone on the Science Forum!
I’ve made little or no contribution to this forum with my time spent here, but as your resident “lurker”, I've been picking up the odd bit of sciencey titbits of knowledge along the way, or so I like to think. So cheers for that, happy Christmas and hope you all have the craic!

    Merry Xmas everyone.

Ours is looking good so far. (Have to remember to buy ice on the way to daughter's house in the morning and we'll be apples.)

Parents arriving in two hours time. Will be enjoying beef tongue, gammon, etc, etc. before the night is out. Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny so we can have a day at the pool.

    Happy Holidays to all.

Though I'm an atheist, one of the pearls I follow from my Catholic upbringing is to live my life by the French version of Luke 2: 14 that translates into the quote: ".....peace on Earth to all men of goodwill," rather than the empty more common English translated version "Peace and goodwill to all men."

For all my friends at this forum, I offer a classic Canadian Christmas song...

I've had it once. It really isn't bad, and actually makes a tasty sandwich.

I'm guessing from your reaction that you wouldn't be into my aunt's fish head stew.

"The only safe rule is to dispute only with those of your acquaintance of whom you know that they possess sufficient intelligence and self-respect not to advance absurdities; to appeal to reason and not to authority, and to listen to reason and yield to it; and, finally, to be willing to accept reason even from an opponent, and to be just enough to bear being proved to be in the wrong."

The car's almost full. Gifts, extra dinner plates and pudding bowls, teatowels and other sundries - easier to use ours and bring them back than to use daughter's and have to do her washing before they get back in 10 days or so, - clear space left for ice (otherwise mr might dump it on top of something breakable).

This is our first Xmas with number 2 daughter's prospective in-laws. Promise to be on my best behaviour.

Actually, having lived in the Pacific Islands for a number of years, I really have no issue with fish head. It's what was served as staff lunch most days, and if you know where to look there is actually an amazing amount of fish meat on it
