Taking the peaked roof off our pergola. We first had it built to provide shade in a treeless backyard but in twenty years our once little saplings have grown to sufficient sizes to cast a nice shadow. All I did back then was take a few really new trees(<1 foot high) from field behind us and stick them in the ground. Despite my brown thumb and considerable negligence, a few grew. Two poplars and three maple.
Anyways the pergola roof is a testament to my late friend’s carpentry skills. It’s withstood everything nature has thrown at it over the years. Hundreds of screws, some bolts and couple dozen hurricane ties. The ties are not easy to remove. My third day and I should be finished today. The treated lumber beneath the roof looks as good as it did back when. I had UV panels for the top and they are also in good shape. Pandemic building supply shortages have raised prices for these things and my relatives have snapped up the free offer. I get to borrow tools, get some help and have things taken away. I think I learn more about stuff and how things work by tearing them down.
