My coworker thinks the Earth and the entire universe is only 6,000 years old. How can I explain how we know what we know about the age of the universe?

But since they're liable to be crazy themselves, debunking probably won't work.

If the Earth was 6000 years old then virtually every branch of science would have to be fundamentally wrong:
Geology, archaeology, biology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, cosmology, palaeontology, genetics, linguistics, anthropology, etc. etc. etc.

And if that was the case, then many of the things that we use every day wouldn't work.

That's what you would think. But the universe was created 6,000 years ago to appear to be 13.77 billion years old.

You will get nowhere talking about the age of the universe. You must address people from within their frame of reference, not by trying to destroy that frame. The things that have to be addressed are 1) Is it more important for a Creator to teach the people he created the value of the age of the universe or the fact that there was a creator? At the time that Genesis was written down it would have been very time consuming to address the true age of the universe. 2) Would a loving God create a world intended to mislead us about when it was created?

Perhaps it is useful to ask which evidence would change the mind of your coworker.
If nothing can convince your coworker from the fact that he/she might wrong, then arguing with him/her is pointless.

Simple. Put the onus on them to demonstrate their belief.

The burden of proof is theirs as they are going against a widely-accepted ideal supported by more evidence that I could begin to list on a forum.

It probably took a few hundred million years before life existed on Earth and yet he thinks the Earth is 6000 years old.

hehehe sorry to hear that, brilliant. Its actually a very difficult thing to change somebodies mind on issue like this. Maybe just start with pictures of distant objects in space, and say something like, "you now it took a million years for that light to arrive here." But yeah good luck.

Unfortunately logic has no power over young-earthers. Arguing with creationists is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock over all the pieces, crap on the board, and strut around the table looking victorious.

It serves its purpose among those that are influenced by YEC's (Early age or later in life) that can see the holes poked in the arguments and perhaps dodge a bullet.

With the current age of the universe can you tell how long you have being laughing?
Since my birth. Other than that, I can't answer that question.

I'd recommend that you simply avoid your coworker if he/she doesn't want to listen to fact because you will just waste your time trying to convince them something they can't comprehend.

Clearly you have never played connect four with a finch, the clever animals evolved from dinosaurs... who went extinct due to an inability to play a chess-like game that moved the Earth, which, had it succeeded, would have swirved away from the asteroid.
