The gema-solar project like in Spain, reflects light from 100's of mirrors onto one tower. The rod inside the tower is heated to about 650C. Cold sea water is pumped through the rod heating it to near that temperature and is pumped down to a hot molten sea water tank. The heated sea water here can be used at any time for electricity, but it can also be stored for upto 15 hours. Its basically a thermal power plant that produces its steam from solar heat.

So my question is would having a big convex lens like burning glass with its focus point on the towers top allow it to be more efficient? Will it be as effective and will it cost more?
Also the reflective mirrors have to be precisely moved along with the sun for reflection to keep heating the tower.
Will the idea be even practical?

I suspect that, like large telescopes, a reflector is much more efficient, cheaper, easier to manufacture, lighter, and easier to control.

Apart from that, a giant magnifying glass would look really cool!

In theory it would work just as well. In practice - how would you lift an aim a piece of glass like that? It would weigh millions of tons. Even a Fresnel lens would weigh an incredible amount. How would you clean it or keep it safe during wind storms? How would you even build it?

Large magnifying glasses are always a bad idea. What if ants commandeer it and use it against us?

I can only think of one reason you would think of ants. You have a guilty conscious of what you did as a child? But did you ever use them for snail races?
