This is a pretty basic question. My mom passed away when I was 6 from Cancer. Shortly after her death I had a dream about here where she was basically saying "goodbye" and not to be worried. 18 years has passed and up until 6 days ago I've never had a dream about her. I find that I'm actually able to somewhat predict if I'll have a dream about something, which is weird in itself, but I was wondering how the brain can suppress a dream like that for 18 years and then randomly happen, especially when the nature of the dream was that she hadn't died at all, she was actually falsely incarcerated, and I was trying to break her out.

Hi newrose and welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure anybody is going to have a good answer for you. But I'll be happy to follow this thread and see what turns up.

    Aloha newrose.

Sorry about the loss of your Mom at such a young age.

I have read a few books about dreams, but I really don't know that I can answer your question! There really isn't any "proof" that I am aware of.

Maybe one of the science people can give you insight!

    Hi newrose.

I donít think your brain is suppressing the dream Ė it just happened that you didnít dream about your mother again until 18 years later. Dreams, I find from my own experience, are random and unpredictable occurrences Ė some recur, some donít.

Thatís just what I think Ė hopefully someone more knowledgeable on this subject will come along and tell us more.

On a similar matter if my dream starts to travel into 'nightmare' mode I know instantly that it isn't real and try to wake myself out of it to avoid any nastiness, however when I do this it really messes with my head, pumps my body full of adrenaline and I can't get back to sleep after. I wish I could go back to just getting on with the nightmare instead of trying to avoid it, leaves me so tired the next day avoiding them!

    I dream the nightmare.

I have woken up crying my eyes out from a dream that was so real I was "living" it.

    How to explain?

    I have no answers.

I have dreamed the death of my grandfather......a pope and a few others the day before it's happening...... I have no clue why. They were not in death's door...by any means. Who knows...I never tried to figure out why....happened three times and then not again in the last 30 years.....
