Is it possible for a domestic cat and a small dog (Chihuahua to be exact) to mate and give birth to a litter?
I'm being told by someone that I want to trust, that she just buried four of the above mentioned baby animals from an accidental breeding. According to my friend, the animals started dying after four weeks, the oldest made almost five and passed 2 days ago, Friday Aug 16, 2013 . There are more details of course, but I'm not out to exploit these poor creatures in any way... whether real or not, or to waste any ones time. I admit to a hint of morbid curiosity on my part, but mainly I just want to know if I'm being told a whopper by this person that I call a friend.

No. The genome is too different and such differences can be incompatible even with the very basic enzymes used to transcribe DNA, much less the splitting of chromosomes. Bear in mind the relative words of "too different." They are very similar, but just not similar enough.
An analogy might be that an Eagle Talon and a Mitsubishi Eclipse are very similar (More similar than cat and dog, actually) but if the crankshaft is different and you try to replace the Eclipse crank with one from a Talon, you won't have an operational car. It'll be a dead piece of weight.

You've been given a whopper. You can play it off as though you're fully aware it was a prank; ask to dig up the corpsified remains to prevent kittyhuahua Zombocalypse or question whether there was a litter but not an interspecies erotica one and she was mistaken or made a foolish assumption.

*Note: Some of the words I used do not actually exist in the English language.

You're being told a whopper. Simple demonstration - cats have 38 chromosomes; dogs have 78. No way you are going to get them together into anything like a coherent genome.

No wonder they're dead, the chihuahua inside told them to kill cats, so they bit themselves until bleeding out.

I think there'd be more chance of a Chihuahua impregnating a Great Dane. (The other way around just doesn't bear thinking about...)

Oh heavens...is that kind of like the half man half horse mythology?

Though....sometimes, that would be a good thing.....one could lift things and one could pull things....hmmmmmm

Your friend is probably just mistaken instead of knowingly lying about it. The puppies might just have had, what he/she judged to be, some feline features or perhaps had a similar pelt pattern than the cat.

The OP doesn't say which way round this is supposed to have happened. If the cat was the mother, then it is possible that someone saw the dog errm ... you know ... with the cat (some dogs will try it on with anything). If the cat was already pregnant (normally) then I can see someone very young (and/or uneducated) drawing the wrong conclusion.

Such an event would be of great interest to the scientific community - a major discovery in fact. You should insist that your friend turn the remains over to a local university for study. That ought to smoke her out.
