    This one has really got me foxed. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Its really heavy and arrived in an auction lot

    Looks like a home made spark plug or ignition system that someone has rigged up...? What happens when you connect the cables ?

    Looks like an X-Ray tube:
    ARPANSA - X-rays
    High Voltage
    (About halfway down that second page you will find a similar looking device)

    Indeed. Personally, I don't think the warning on that second site is either strong enough or in big enough type!

    And the weird thing is, I knew what it was as soon as I saw it but I don't remember ever seeing one before...

    Embarrassingly I've done a load of work with X-rays, but never saw what they emerged from! Next for my mystery glassware. I do worry what they hoarder that previously owned this van full of stuff was up to. Enough glassware to set up a crystal meth lab, up to and including 10l boiling flasks.
