I'm a 16 year old high school student with loads of free time, what do you recommend I do to try and get involved with my science community over the summer? I am going to check out a solar observatory soon and hopefully get to use some telescopes in the near future, however I want to try and get associated with the people around me involved in science and science related studies.

I am not a scientist. I am a theatre arts performer, however, I have worked with both JHS and HS students.

There are probably programs for you to enroll in or camps that will gear towards science, just as some gear towards, music, sports, etc.

I would suggest, to contact your local colleges and find out what kind of camps are available and if that is within your family means, then sign up for one or two.

If not, and you are interested in forestry, as a science, you might contact your Department of Fish and Wildlife for possible things they have. They may also have the resources to refer you to places that meet you interests and needs.

The best of luck to you, and you might find some of these "summer schools" enlightening. I did a lot a music and musical theatre when I was your age in the summer when I wasn't on the road. It benefited me in meeting new people, and acquiring/improving my skill sets in my profession.

What areas in Solar obs are you interested in and what are the parameters for your project.

There are usually loads of outreach and college campus programs in which you could get involved. Plus, if you get involved with a local college program, you could get future credits.

    *smile*

    I do my best.

    People interest me more......than anything.

How they move, respond, talk, and even type.....so yes, I do enjoy meeting the people and observing them. It is part of my job.

Well I am pretty much semi-retired, unless something hits me so hard, I have to do it.

Actually, I am doing a show on August 8th, and Christmas music again this year, and was asked to perform for a Christmas "Parade" big Hawai'i thing also.

I pretty much do what I wish, anymore, but one doesn't study like that all their lives to just stop doing it.

It also gives you insight to people.

    Hey there xXplosionZz,

Astronomy could be a great place to start, there are many clubs and like minded people around the world already.
It's something I've only recently taken up also, but there's a great forum to help people get started:

Activity Stream - Astronomy Forums | Telescope Forums & Reviews | Astronomy Community

Also at Astronomy Magazine - Interactive Star Charts, Planets, Meteors, Comets, Telescopes :- This is a magazine and really useful for making contact with local astronomy groups and learning the basics, well that what I've found

The forum has been great as well lots of really friendly people willing to give advice on what telescopes to look for, what to see
    and places to visit etc...

So my advice would be contact a specialist forum or magazine and find a local group in your area for the branch of science
which you find most interesting, doesn't have to be astronomy that's just example, and find out what projects are running that
you can get involved with and take part.
Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it. - confucius

    Can I?

    How do I do this.

It certainly doesn't fit the package.
