    Good question. According to Wikipedia:
The term is a calque [literal translation] of Latin angulus rectus; here rectus means "upright", referring to the vertical perpendicular to a horizontal base line.

Hi, just imagine a clock hand moving through 90 degrees, what you get is the hand pointing to the right. At no other angle of degrees would the hand be pointing exactly to the right.

    Clever. Very clever. (But wrong)

I was trying to think of an explanation based on right = correct. But gave up and "cheated".

Those Romans would have been buggered giving a right angle a snappy name if they'd invented digital clocks before analogue ones!

It could have been a "left-angle", but left has sinister connotations. (Joke)

Funnily enough rectangle has the same root...
    "Rect-" from rectus.

It has to do with, ahem, the angle of the dangle. As with most expressions it appears that the right angle has a sexual root cause.

It's called a right angle because anything else would be wrong.
