I was wondering whether it would be possible to live a healthy life without ingesting any kind of nutrition through one's own mouth.

I once dreamt of a mad scientist who worked day and night on papers and study, and whose nutrition came solely from a syringe that he would inject into his arm every so often per day.

Disregard the dream. Anyway, I was wondering whether this phenomenon had any pragmatic applications, and whether it would be possible to stay alive and well under such living standards.

If so, would one have to start from birth, or could the body adapt to it?

I don't mean a feeding tube or a catheter; I mean something like a 3 times a day injection of a protein, carb, fat solution that kept the body healthy as that of David Hasselhoff

You could do it, but you'd die.

Maybe not that way. But I believe you can survive on liquid and powder alone though. A friend of mine told me Bruce Lee spent his last 3 years living almost exclusively on protein drinks and liquid, but I dont take the word of my friend as scientific evidence

Not eating solid food... Im not sure what that would do to your body. I thought myself that aslong as you get the required nourishment you could survive without. Having to eat solid "food" just for the sake of it *shouldnt* have a malign effect right?

I, for one, would love to live the rest of my life without ever having to poop again.

I don't know. Toilet time is the only time I get to be by myself, with no responsibilities, reading a good book.

As for living without eating, that would REALLY suck. I love food and I can't imagine taking my ribeye intravenously.

No. Without food there is no growth without growth there is no life.

A friend of mine had a child with Batten's Disease and this child survived for about 7 years on liquid nutrition directly into the stomach as they lost their ability to swallow. There is no cure and eventually the child passed away as other systems shut down.

Food is the means by which we derive our energy and the population of gut bacteria is critical to our survival. When we upset the balance of healthy gut flora, other interdependent systems also begin to fail.

It would seem highly unlikely to me that our species could by-pass the digestive system without a lengthy period of evolving another energy delivery system.

As the old fellow commented, "I had a dog that I was conditioning not to eat. Just about the time he got really good at it, he up and died."

But no liquid nutrition is being fed into his stomach.

    Well, that certainly convinced me.

Hasselhoff? EEEWWWW. He was gross looking even when the media tried to convince us he was hot. You need better asperations than that.
Speaking badly about people after they are gone and jumping on the bash the band wagon must do very well for a low self-esteem.
