Believe it or not, I do not own a cellphone nor do I have any other communication devices on my person at any time. I only have my little Mac Mini which like a good dog, loyally sits at home waiting for me. I will admit that there are times when I think the situation I'm in would benefit from me owning a cellphone. However there are more times that I realize I really don't need it. It's not that I couldn't afford one, I just don't want one. If people want to find me, they do, eventually. I'm constantly being nagged by people I know to buy one. Why do people feel I need to have a phone to carry around?

I carry one for emergencies. There aren't even any pay phones around any more. I guess if you needed to make a phone call, you'd have to borrow somebody's phone.

That's the only situation where I might need one.

Funny how the current predominance of phones actually makes my not having one practically irrelevant. I don't need an emergency phone because the odds are very good that the next person along will have one if I'm in need of one.

That is an excellent question, zinjanthropos. The only reason that I have a cell phone at all is because hubby insists it makes him feel better to know that I can call out in an emergency because I travel alone a lot, on horseback in remote regions and driving to work for graveyard shift. I have owned that phone for 5 years and months go by without my turning it on. The most interaction I have with it is to make sure it is charged at regular intervals.

Maybe I would have enjoyed having a cell phone and internet connectivity when I was in that younger, more socially oriented stage in life but now that I know who I am and what I want, I really do not care to be available to people save those that are important to me. Time is short and I guard my personal time jealously.

Those that know me, all know how to reach me. Those that are not on my 'short list' shall just have to await an opening through attrition.

I don't carry a cell phone either. I have a pay to charge one that I refill when my wife and I occastionally take on long trips--a couple times a year. For my day to day recreation, in most places, I'd be likely to get into trouble there would be no coverage. At my house, only 15 miles from the state capital, there's very poor coverage, I can get at most one bar standing on one leg balanced on my back porch rail one hand on the phone and the other hanging onto the roof eave. In populated areas, if there's really an emergency most other people carry a phone, and failing that an old fashion knock on a door almost always works.

Once in a great while, while shopping at a hardware store or someplace similar, I'll see someone do some cost comparison shopping on a smart phone--that's pretty useful, but still probably wouldn't worth the monthly rates they charge--I can do the same from the house, before I drive there.

The areas of coverage for cell phones in our region is also greatly limited. I am having a good chuckle over the image of Lynx_Fox performing the 'human antenna' position required for optimum reception on his back porch and imagining what the neighbors would be thinking, lol.

"Ma, get the children indoors. Looks like our neighbor has been into that Newfie Screech once again. Go by the rotary dial and warn the rest of the folks while I keep an eye on the goings on."

I don't need to know what anyone is doing at all hours of the day. Do cellphone addicts or their friends enjoy any privacy? I saw someone in the water at a local beach holding the cellphone aloft as to not get it wet.

    That's hilarious.

Mind you, that points out the vacancy in the current marketplace for waterproof cell phones and swimsuits with pockets.

Apparently, they are already hard at work on the waterproof cell phone...
