I have never heard the term "Degenerating Genes". Can you give us a reference to where you came across it?

Then presumably they don't know what they are talking about and just made up this "fact".

So he starts with a completely unsupported assertion: "Nearly all mutations (greater than 99.9% of them) are neutral and slightly deleterious" and then proceeds to draw an illogical conclusion: "The human genome is inevitably doomed to degenerate."

I would therefore assume he is just some random moron and ignore him. Perhaps you should study some biology instead of the bible and crackpot blogs?

just because my parents drove me into hardcore religion as a kid.

now the biggest thing bugging me is: What if religion is real?

i would go to hell. (well described in bible)

With regard to the question in the thread title: you mis-spelt.
It's CLEARLY a reference to the failing quality of the average pair of Levi's as compared to, say, 30 years ago.

    Uh, religion IS real
    Religion is a fact.

The subject of religion however is not.

I'm not sure that is a good reason to study science.

What if someone else's religion is real and you are all going to hell for believing the wrong one?

i would go to hell. (well described in bible)

    Nope.
Unless your aim is to find every single fault in the bible.

    From good-old Wikipedia:
The Christian doctrine of hell derives from the teaching of the New Testament, where hell is typically described using the Greek words Tartarus or Hades or the Hebrew word Gehenna.
These three terms have different meanings and must be recognized.
    • Hades has similarities to the Old Testament term, Sheol as "the place of the dead". Thus, it is used in reference to both the righteous and the wicked, since both wind up there eventually.[26]
    • Gehenna refers to the "Valley of Hinnon", which was a garbage dump outside of Jerusalem. It was a place where people burned their garbage and thus there was always a fire burning there. Bodies of those deemed to have died in sin without hope of salvation (such as people who committed suicide) were thrown there to be destroyed.[27] Gehenna is used in the New Testament as a metaphor for the final place of punishment for the wicked after the resurrection.[28]
    • Tartaro (the verb "throw to Tartarus") occurs only once in the New Testament in II Peter 2:4, where it is parallel to the use of the noun form in 1 Enoch as the place of incarceration of 200 fallen angels. It mentions nothing about human souls being sent there in the afterlife.
Hell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It also says: The Roman Catholic Church defines Hell as "a state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed."

Ooooh... scary. Or maybe just like real life.

Actually, I can't really understand this. Surely there is a simple test: do you believe in god? There are only two possible answers: yes or no.

I don't care (and unlike a lot of people here, I don't think it matters) which answer you have.

I do care, however, if you allow your beliefs (religious or otherwise) to interfere with reality (e.g. that cretin who said that if a fact contradicts the bible, then the fact must be wrong).

Back to 'degenerating genes'. I don't know whether the person you heard at church was or wasn't referring to the item you found.

The very first thing that occurred to me was that someone not technically trained made a very common mistake. They've heard the term "degenerating" somewhere relating to genetics, they've also heard of genetic degenerative diseases. (Huntington's, Charcot-Marie-Tooth) They've associated the two concepts - without doing so deliberately because that would require understanding both terms - and come up with nonsense. A lot of non-scientists make the same error by conflating the common uses of a word with a technical specific use of the same word - and come up with nonsense.

And I hate to tell you, that blog was nonsense anyway.

As for science proving anything, religious or otherwise, it just won't happen. That's not what science and scientific thinking do. And that's where a lot of people with a religious background lose their way. They're used to the idea of absolute truth. There's little to no absolute anything in science.
