Last year I did something that I regret, but am wondering why it didnt succeed in electricuting me. I pulled a toaster...ON, and radio...ON into the tub with me filled with water. both were plugged into a regular outlet together on an extention cord. At first nothing, then mild shock, then I took got out of tub and unplugged. I DO NOT RECCOMMEND THIS!!!!!! But Just Wondering why it didn't "work" Thanks, GS.

The answer is simple, you are Thor and the mild shock was electricity tickling your balls.

Not sure where you are but in modern nations ground fault protection has been part of electrical codes for about 40 years and is required in rooms where there's a water source. It's designed to throw a breaker before electrocution.

Hopefully, whatever it was that inspired you to take on the mighty Volt Gods has passed. Lynx Fox effectively answered your question, but there are other reasons, as well. I'm certainly not inclined to let you in on how to make it work right.
Allow me to second your opinion- it's not recommended as a way of checking out.

If you had to reset your circuit breaker, then your ground fault circuit interrupter probably saved you. If not, it could just be that your body was not solidly connected to ground. Perhaps you were not touching the water faucet or drain pipes or other grounded metal object.

don't be silly, he probably had too much conditioner in his hair. conditioner is to hair what fabric softener is to clothing. it stops static electricity.

Seriously though, I should be ashamed of myself for making light of this. And I agree with Neverfly, I don't think anyone should be inclined to tell you how to make it work. For people who have good logical reasons to want to check out, a calm sensible and effective means would be sought. To want to check out violently like that shows a lack of planning and an emotionally charged decision. the kind of decision that is almost never rational.

Well, in that case, you were just plain lucky.

If you'd been touching anything except the plastic/ fibreglass/ whatever of the bath itself, you probably wouldn't be here to talk about it.

May I suggest not tempting fate by putting those appliances somewhere else?

sitting in the tub of water
the water effectively conducts most of the electricity around you.

    getting out, however
with one foot in the tub and one foot out
maybe grasping a metal bar for stability?
    could be damned entertaining

Just curious as to why you keep a toaster next to the tub. I plugged it in along with a radio together with an extention cord, both on thinking surely this would electricute me. The cops were pounding on the door and i didnt want to go to jail. went to jail but now glad it didnt "work".

in older houses that use copper pipes, a ground can be set up through either the drain or the spigot,
then there would be a path through a body,
otherwise the newer houses have nonconducting PVC attached to the drain and faucet so no ground path..
