The season of the solstice, Christmas and New year has a lot of music associated with it. While driving home today, I heard this one, which is new to me, but it was just the right tempo to wind down to after a busy night.

This is a season of wide ranging emotions and I invite others to post their favorite songs, be they sacred, sad, cheerful, silly or even mischievous but please limit your comments simply to your own selections and if a song strikes a chord with you, then hit that 'like' button and let's liven up this place.

westwind and question for you like this.

This next song has been more than a little controversial as we go into the history of it, prior to it being performed.

This song was playing on our loop at work this morning. I found a live version that has some excellent solo parts towards the end.

I've got to get some sleep and then head in and help with the stocking. The final drive for the home stretch is on as of today. We moved all of our table displays out of the back aisle that goes from dairy, past meat and across to bakery so that the shoppers can race three carts abreast now. It's a jungle out there, I tell you, lol...

I'll come back and see what you've all added when I return from work.

    Bring on the tunes!

Not at all fond of country. Not. at. all.

    Try some Domingo and Pavarotti.

All commentary requires an additional musical contribution to the thread, please, and it is inappropriate to comment on the attributes of another human being in such manner. Beauty is in the eye, or in this case, the ear, of the beholder. How thankful I am to have been blessed with hearing, for it would be sad not to know such beautiful sound, and sadder yet not to know what one was missing...

For a complete change of pace, and dedicated to the world of commerce, I now offer Jeff Foxworthy's take on a classic...

No, it isn't. Appropriateness is in the mind of the listener and frankly, ugly is ugly and I'm allowed to point it out without being politically correct about it. Susan Boyle is not in denial in the least and has a sense of humor about her looks. At least in all her public appearances.
It is appropriate, true and I'm not gonna sugar coat it if I feel the urge to comment on it and if you dislike it, now is the perfect time to keep it to yourself.

A lot of graveyard crew likes metal, lol...

This thread is about music, not opinions, I would like to remind all.

Over the next few days, I'm sure that I will find and post a musical insult to the ear of many. Of course, listening is purely optional.

Old metal head here... But I can tune my ears to the tenors Adelady posted above just as easily. Bocelli and Pavarotti make a great combo.

I saw that in the O.P. but I tend to be my own man and not necessarily follow all suggestions. I state my opinions as I sees fit and ask only of others that they grit their teeth and bear it.
My perspective is- what good is sharing anything, music or ideas without the support of commentary? I'd never have been introduced to many different forms of music I would not have otherwise unless I'd been talked into it.

*video deleted due to poor sound quality.

This one has an astronomical video so I thought it would be educational for TSF

P.S... Susan Boyles looks quite friendly and sweet, hardly what I would call 'ugly'. It can't be nice to hear the world calling you ugly...

I only posted this video so that I could make a comment on speedfreaks last post...

That Bowie and bing introduction was surreal! What was that, 70's? 80's?

I imagine that shortly after that stuffy orchestrated performance alongside Bing, Bowie decided to camp up his hair and cloths in order to make sure he didn't get typecast and forced into a life of blissful cheesyness. Nice duet though.

You've opened a new can of christmas worms with Spector and the Ronnettes.

I was thinking that there could only be about 20 or 30 christmas songs I have heard... after having a look on youtube I realise there are far more than I would care to remember!

In 1977 Bowie was starting to "normalise" his image, hence that TV special he made with Bing Crosby. Then, in 1982 he did the introduction to...

Oh ok... so all the glam was to get attention and then he tried to normalise afterwards? I'm showing my age now, I wasn't around at the time.

P.S my IE is slowing up on this thread a bit too and has been since the early stages. TSF seems to be going a little slowly these days... unless it's all the viruses in my system.

    Lot of heavy youtube links.
Follow S.G.'s suggestion to Westwind for a moment and see if it makes a difference. If it does, you'll know the culprit.

Hey Mac, I notice that this thread is much slower on Firefox than it is on IE, which I just switched to as an experiment. I'm wondering if it is because of the number of posts on one page that have been posted as video. On another forum where I have been posting music for several years, they limit the page length to 10 posts and the pages load quickly.

I really enjoy the color that the images add to the season and the reason for this thread but was curious if that might be some of the delay. Also, I expect that the bandwidth across the nation is getting hit big time now that the kids are out of school. More users with mobile phones and apps being added every second....

Just my thoughts, as I am not much of a tech...

Are you able to direct me to which sub-menu under settings? I can't seem to find such an option and seldom adjust anything other than toss in an avatar and use the forum defaults for most things.

Yes, if you click the Settings tab at the far upper right of your profile or My Settings under your profile on the left hand side, then go to General Settings- scroll down to Thread Display Options.
It's the second drop down menu down: Number of Posts to Show Per Page.

Thank you, Neverfly. That was quite easy to attend to following your instructions. That there was such an option had just not occured to me and I am usually just reading and posting so don't tend to poke around a lot. If it's getting me where I want to go, good enough, lol...

Use task manager to close out firefox and probably I.E. as well (Don't close windows explorer)
If you haven't already- Download CCleaner.
Run it (it's basic or default setting should be enough).
    Reinitialize FF.
For some reason, the vBulletin software and FireFox leads to script errors if certain bits of the html get lost (usually when they end up in the dumprep folder instead of prefetch.)
About once every three weeks, I have to do the above or the forum will look like Craigslist.

    ETA:
    Crap! I forgot!

    Uhhmmm...Think one up- quick... uhhh...
    Sigh...

    Sings off key:
Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg.
That batmobile has lost a wheel and Alfred broke his leg...
    HEY!

This is a song by Stan Rogers that has always struck a chord with me.

First Christmas - Stan Rogers - Live - YouTube

First Christmas - Stan Rogers Between the breaks - Live

This day a year ago, he was rolling in the snow
With a younger brother in his father's yard
Christmas break, a time for touching home,
the heart of all he'd known
    And leaving was so hard

    Three thousand miles away,
    now he's working Christmas Day
Making double time for the minding of the store
Well he always said, he'd make it on his own
    He's spending Christmas Eve alone
    First Christmas away from home

She's standing by the train station,
    pan-handling for change
Four more dollars buys a decent meal and a room
Looks like the Sally Ann place after all,
    in a crowded sleeping hall
    That echoes like a tomb

But it's warm and clean and free,
and there are worse places to be
And at least it means no beating from her Dad
And if she cries because it's Christmas Day
She hopes that it won't show
    First Christmas away from home

In the apartment stands a tree,
and it looks so small and bare
Not like it was meant to be,
    Golden angel on the top
It's not that same old silver star,
    you wanted for your own
    First Christmas away from home

In the morning, they get prayers,
then it's crafts and tea downstairs
Then another meal back in his little room
Hoping maybe that "the boys" will think to phone
    before the day is gone
Well, it's best they do it soon

When the "old girl" passed away,
he fell apart more every day
Each had always kept the other pretty well
But the kids all said the nursing home was best
    Cause he couldn't live alone
    First Christmas away from home

In the common room they've got the biggest tree
And it's huge and cold and lifeless
Not like it ought to be,
and the lit-up flashing Santa Claus on top
It's not that same old silver star,
you once made for your own
    First Christmas away from home

I took these pictures yesterday morning driving home from work. The first one is the ice fog rising from the Yukon River as the sun breaks through and in the second picture, you will see a sun dog, usually a harbinger of colder weather. Sure enough, it was -30C at midnight and -37C by 7:00 a.m. today.

I thought that this was a fitting song to go with these pictures. Willie Nelson ft. Norah Jones - Baby It's Cold Outside - YouTube

Oh well. -37 there, +37 here.

At least they're predicting a change in wind direction this afternoon. With 18 predicted as the overnight minimum, it's going to have to start cooling down PDQ.

This is a lovely little song that I have just come across and it even mentions Whitehorse, where I live, in the first line...

I came across a 'naughty but nice' jazzy Christmas song today, that I have never heard on the radio.

No wonder the old gent is so jolly...

This being a thread for seasonal music, we would be remiss if we neglected to post some New Years tunes. This old classic by ABBA may well resonate with some.
