Last night in Chicago I was driving and I glanced at the sky and noticed I Giant dark black line directly in front of the full moon we had. It was directly through the middle of the moon, I couldn't even see around it. I know it couldn't have been from a jet because it had a clear start point and end point and it went vertical instead of horizontal. It slowly drifted right and after about ten minutes it looked like it split in the middle and then just disappeared. I've tried looking into it but I can't find anything, anyone have any ideas of what it could've been?

This is a first. Never heard anything like it. Too bad you couldn't snap a picture.
I would easily speculate that a tower from a skyscraper may have intersected the full Moon, though you seem to describe that line as wider than that would appear at that kind of distance.

I cannot think of any atmospheric phenomena that would do that. Or any flying object aside from TMA-1 (Monolith.)

It was probably the remains of a contrail from a passenger jet plane. If it is vertical it just means the plane passed overhead and was coming from/going towards the horizon.

I am very mad at myself for not taking a picture, and I thought it was a contrail but it just seemed to thick and too dark to be one. It also wasn't a line that was perfectly straight like a contrail typically is, but I guess the wind could have given it the jagged look that I saw.

Jagged... the O.P gave no impression of jaggedness.

I saw a vertical definite line (looked as if there were a wire in front of the moon. But it was too high up in the sky and around nothing to be anything like a wire or branch) I was with my friend and we both witnessed it. It did not dissipate or lose its form just slowly made its way across the moon and out of the rays to be visible. The line started under the moon and vertically reached above the moon as well. Like I said this didn't dissipate and was viewable for at least 6 min. I have seen these pics of planes and did not match what we saw. I am thinking it was a trail from something falling into the atmosphere but do not know. Did anyone else witness this on December 01 2012?
