I have no scientific evidence nor could I google a decent study that might shed some light on this thought: Our proclivity for war has genetically predisposed us to be promiscuous. IMHO it may be that war, because of its affect on the surface population combined with the lengthy amount of time soldiers spend away from home, creates a situation where promiscuity is a necessary component for our continuing evolution.

For most of history soldiering was primarily a male profession, a risky one at best. Is there an urgency for sex because of the constant threat of an early death? Of course in the field most of the sex a soldier obtains would be by force, possibly some love, pay for it or have it provided for you as a fringe benefit of your trade. I've read stories that tell of army commanders ensuring that soldiers get a steady diet of sex even if just for morale. I just have a feeling that mobile armed forces left a lot a little bastards in their wake.

Now let's think of the home front. Wives, husbands, girlfriends & boyfriends must deal with the question, will their lover return? Does this angst create a situation similar to a soldier in the field? I guess if a chastity belt is an invention from necessity then I would have to think so.

Am I stretching it if I go way back in our history to find early hunter/gatherer in the same position as a soldier. Remember the movie "Quest for Fire"? The hunters meet up with a strange tribe and eventually one has sex with a female from that tribe.

Personally I think prolonged absence from home coupled with a constant threat of death may have contributed to, dare I say, a cultural meme developing. Is promiscuity necessary for the species to survive? It could very well be that promiscuity exists for totally other reasons but I thought I'd introduce the topic at least.

I don't think it's a cultural meme, just the sex drive that needs satisfying. Call it promiscuity if you like, when the sex drive is satisfied by a new partner because the usual partner isn't around.

Put yourself in a woman's place......Your village is sacked by a rampaging horde, the men are all dead, wounded or taken prisoner. Is it in your best interest to give of yourself wantonly or physically resist when it becomes a matter of survival?

I've read where Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens were rumored to have interbred. If so then do you think it was a mutually agreed upon thing or a direct result of a violent event?
