Yeah, I wasn't sure where this thread ought to have been created in (Physics? Science-Fiction and Non-Fiction?), but I'll just post it here and perhaps the moderators can move it to a more appropriate forum.

I've been reading some of my old scifi novels again, and watching some old star trek episodes recently. And this question just popped into my head, and I wasn't sure what the answer was.

Q1: Is a "multiverse" just another name for a "parallel universe"? If it is, great. But if it isn't, what are some of the main differences?
Q2: Suppose that a multiverse or parallel universe does exist, would all of them share the same cosmological beginning, or can they each have a different cosmological beginning?

    Thanks in advance.

A "multiverse" is an collection of universes where every possibility that could have existed in our universe is played out in another universe within the multiverse.

In other words, a parallel universe is part (or a slice/layer) of a multiverse, and they aren't one and the same. I guess that clears up question 1.

Any thoughts on question 2? Could these "every possibility" have included a different beginning for each? i.e. a big bang for one slice, and "something else" for another?

As far as my understanding is each new universe, within the multiverse, is create at that particular point in time where there is a choice of possible outcomes, thus trillions are created every day.
