    Hello all

My name is Andrew Salmons, and I'm currently studying for my masters at Kingston university.

I've recently chosen to undertake my research paper on El Nino phenomenon. My chosen paper will be a complete overview of El Nino/La Nina and the effects it has worldwide on everything basically. Weather and climate to ecological aspects, and I will look to see if there is one major indicator that El Nino is currently in effect.

So I'm signing up to scientific forums to gather as much information as possible from experts of the area, who could hopefully provide me with a comprehensive list of affects of El Nino which I could then study.

I look forward to hearing from you

    Regards
    Andrew

Well, I presume you need to get on top of the Southern Oscillation Index Climate Glossary - Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) as well as ENSO ENSO Wrap-Up.

If you want to get a handle on how ENSO affects weather and climate worldwide you could work backwards from Foster & Rahmstorf 2011 Global temperature evolution 1979 .

This is discussed extensively at The Real Global Warming Signal | Open Mind and there are a couple of earlier posts on Foster's blog where these ideas were being developed.

Still Going Down the Up Escalator and
A Comprehensive Review of the Causes of Global Warming Give some good leads to useful papers - remembering always that ENSO doesn't have any impact on long term warming trends.

About the Lack of Warming… | Climate Abyss | a Chron.com blog is an absolutely brilliant simple display of ENSO temperature effects. (You have to look elsewhere for drought, precipitation etc.)
John Nielsen-Gammon Comments on Continued Global Warming includes one of their famous animations of John n g's graphs.

There are also several other worthwhile items on Skeptical Science. This is the results page for search on ENSO Skeptical Science Search Results . The great thing about this is that it saves you a bit of your own search and analysis. All the relevant scientific papers are referenced and linked for every item.

"A complete overview of El Nino/La Nina and the effects it has worldwide on everything basically. Weather and climate to ecological aspects, and I will look to see if there is one major indicator that El Nino is currently in effect."

is a pretty big task. Your citation list will be huge if you don't narrow this down a bit. And you'll find very quickly that the El Nino indicators run only a very few months ahead of the real thing showing up. See the BOM links above. By the time your paper's done, we will know for certain about El Nino for this year with some very rough estimates for next year.

The Australian BOM would be one of the prime sites to find good material because we need to get on top of drought predictions as well as high temperature expectations. (Whereas the USA gets drought during La Nina conditions.) But NASA and NOAA have excellent resource links as well.
