i'm dealing with this experiment and i still cannot get an acceptable answer for this.

a gas is produced when 2-chloro-2-methyl-propane is added into potassium hydroxide in ethanol. this gas turns off burning splint when introduced into it and it also turns bromine water colourless. what gas is it? it is possible it to be hydrogen but if it is hydrogen then the burning splint should go off with a pop sound isn't it? but this gas does not give a pop sound when burning splint is introduced into it.

    what exactly is this gas?
