Many of the proplems caused seem to be down to poverty and or greed. The impacts of population seem largely irrelevant by comparison of the economics involved. If people had enough money to live then they would need to adopt slash and burn policies. Also if the greed of rich farmers and developers can be controlled or regulated then again inviromental impacts can be controlled. There to be a concerted effort to provide people places to live within the cities so that they are not dependant on the land for the survival.
No of the problems that are being attributed to over population would exist if the population expansion was managed properly. There seems to be a concerted effort to produce propaganda supporting population reduction methods, which seems a worrying trend and a major distraction from the real issue of actually helping poor countries out of poverty and ensuring that they are run properly in the interests of the people, not just as place where rich countries can use to obtain cheap resources from.
A well run and managed poor country where the population is increasing is more likely to understand the value of and plan how to use their resources effectively. The converse equally applies that if rich western countries can convince countries that they are poor because of increasing population it gives them a useful smoke screan for continueing to exploit that country for it's resources.
There are also people around the world that see the growing power of poorer countries, through larger work forces, as a threat to their control of resources and economic interests. If a country has a small population then it probarbly can't use all of it's own resources, if a country has a large population it has enough people to use all it's resources and thus not as vunerable to exploitation.
