According to science our ancestors that once were more ape like and lived in the trees (herbivores) some left onto the savanaughs and began to eat meat (carnivores) and in modern day we are considered ominivores. However the transition from being herbivores to carnivores doesn't fit since the teeth of herbivores plus their digestion abilities is very different from carnivore's teeth and their ability to digest meat.

So how does science explain that in our evolutionary history?

Don't think so. There's plenty of evidence of chimps eating meat and eggs - not every week or even every month - but they certainly don't qualify as exclusive herbivores. They hunt cooperatively when the chance arises, and they relish the meat when they get it.

Barbi, could you tell us what specific sources your looking at use a herbivore -> Carnivore -> omnivore progression.

There was a recent article in Science Daily (cannot find the link now) that said it would take many steps to changing from a herbivore to a carnivore and even longer to becoming an omnivore.

hmm, sounds like the article may have oversimplified things a bit, though I cant say with any certainty since I dont find a link for any article saying that on Science Daily

I'm unaware of any claim that we went through a carnivore stage, but that may reflect my ignorance. I have always understood we went from herbivore to omnivore and as adelady has pointed out our cousins are already partly engaged in this approach.
