After ten years a Russian team has finally drilled through two miles of Antarctic Ice cap of ice to the huge lake underneath. The lake might have been isolated up to 20 million years. They won't start any research until next year. With a lake the size of Ontario to explore, I hope they make some amazing discoveries over the next few years.

Quite an amazing feat of engineering, this drilling operation; now imagine this being done on the moon Europa !

obviously Europa is a totally different kettle of fish as far as drilling technology is concerned ...

Most definitely. I don't think drilling would be a viable option there; the "heat probe" proposal ( a probe melting its way through to the bottom ) is probably more realistic.

I'm most curious as to why the New York Times thinks lake Vostok is in Europe?

LOL. Because it would have taken twice as many words to explain the article to Americans--aka a Sarah Palin edition?

Should be some interesting fish on the menu in St. Petersburger real soon.
Search engines are such useful tools .. I wonder why more people don't use them?
