I was surprised to find wiki and other search engines voluntarily shut down out of protest for two versions of over anti-piracy bills called the Stop Online Priracy Act and Protect IP Act. As best I can tell (they are complex) the gist is Internet providers could be held responsible for the content passed through their services and in addition some industries could force IPs and by extension users to pay for any use of their content.

Try to go to Wiki for find out more.

My take is the music and movie industry are way out of control; they already have laws making their intellectual rights longer than lifetimes. The rights to a musical from generations ago last longer than a cure for cancer--which is absurd. It's a gross sense of entitlement motivative by pure greed without an acknowledgment of fair use doctrine. Anything which puts the transformative technologies of shared information at risk are an anathema to freedom.

This article seems to have a good summary of the problems with SOPA: Why SOPA Is Dangerous

combine the willingness of the US to make silly legislation with things like the extradition act 2003, and you end up with one country feeling it has an entitlement to legislate for the rest of the world

The one thing I think is kind of strange about this SOPA/PIPA business is that I can't find any information regarding how ISPs are feeling about these bills. At first glance you'd think the implied position they'd have is one of opposition... But they don't seem to be making any noise about it themselves. What do you guys think about the possibility that ISPs might not actually be opposed to this at all? I could see the entertainment industries waiving ISP accountability in exchange for more lucrative opportunities, along with the government as well. When a site is blocked the ISPs could just have you redirect to whatever they want you to see, the ISPs can document what type of users are trying to access blocked material - which they could sell.

So, any thoughts on the entertainment industry and the ISPs getting in bed with each other if SOPA/PIPA were to see the light of day?

Really? Opposition is in the lead now? Well. That's good to hear. I thought it was just a handful of supporters that backed out.

In many cases they are the same entity. For example comcast is a huge internet provider (including mine), and they own NBC/Un iversal/Viacon probably 2 dozen channels of TV.

I dunno, might protect certain parties from INFLAMMATORY subject matter, heheheh...

Yeah, I was surprised too, and well said, Lynx, couldn't agree more. It is on par with the silly lawsuit mess the country has found itself in, too many laws, few are which truly in the public's best interests.

My comment is that if you only want to hear from people who agree with you on everything you will fit right in around here.
