It does not have the same coincidence in other languages.

By the way, there also are other words that have another meaning when spelled backward:

    god
    naive
    ...

and others that still be the same word when spelled backward:

    level
    a man a plan a canal panama
If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism

Why should a word spelt backward carry any special or deeper meaning?

This space is intentionally left blank

English is the first language of about 6% of the world's population ( third after Mandarin and Spanish ). I doubt if quirks of the English language amount to a hill of beans in the scheme of things.

Really, this is an interesting topic. I think it's [sorta] human to see (or want to see) hidden messages in things.

There's augury of chicken bones, sheep guts, tea leaves, reading palms, etc. There's purposely distorting one's thought process, such as ingesting hallucinogens (peyote, mushrooms, etc), inhaling sulfuric vapors from a volcanic vent (attributed to the Oracle at Delphi), stressing the body physically (sweat lodges, fasting, etc), etc. We see bunny rabbits and people's faces in clouds. We want to think that the info about the future is available if only we could somehow see it or reveal it.

As for reversing words, I think the spookiest one is, if you knew (or wanted) your kid to be the first human alien somewhere, you'd give him the first name of "Neil" and a middle name beginning with "A". Right?
Grief is the price we pay for love. (CM Parkes) Our postillion has been struck by lightning. (Unknown) War is always the choice of the chosen who will not have to fight. (Bono) The years tell much what the days never knew. (RW Emerson) Reality is not always probable, or likely. (JL Borges)

Um, not to be pedantic, but life spelled backwards is efil. Words backward or forward have a more or less "collective meaning". They mean something because we agree they do, in the same manner, words that spell other words backward will have meta meaning if we agree they do. I for one, think it's rubbish.

    Etymology: Evil
    Etymology: Live

I don't know why someone decided to revive this dead thread but, oddly, it is one of the OP's more intelligent contributions to the forum.

"Efil" might sound even more sinister than "evil" (in a caricatured kind of way)

How about what Adam said to Eve when they first met:

    "Madam in Eden, I'm Adam"

What I think after reading a crank post:

    "Dammit, I'm Mad"

or a theological question about water-fowl:

    "Do geese see God"

I should have known from the title that this thread wasn't worth entering.

    Racecar backwards spells racecaR. Coincidence?

"The only safe rule is to dispute only with those of your acquaintance of whom you know that they possess sufficient intelligence and self-respect not to advance absurdities; to appeal to reason and not to authority, and to listen to reason and yield to it; and, finally, to be willing to accept reason even from an opponent, and to be just enough to bear being proved to be in the wrong."

Did you hear the one about the architect who had his house made backwards so he could watch TV?

Err... I think there is a typo in there somewhere.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    It should read "housemaid"

I have discovered that you can take ANY word, reverse it, re-arrange the letters, and you get EXACTLY the same word again!
    How amazing is that?
