I heard someone in my class today say that all scientists (science majors) love Science Fiction movies. I must be an odd ball because I do not. I watched the maintstream movies like Star Wars but dressing up and visting chat rooms about Luke and Leia is not for me. I rarely ever watch the Sci Fi channel. So does anyone else love science but are not into science fiction movies?

I only enjoy plausible sci-fi...but why bother learning nonsense when you can learn science fact? My own mind can come up with sci-fi scenarios while doing actual science.

Exactly. I kind of look at Sci-fi as a joke. I know that is why it's called fiction but I really don't get it. I heard someone say once that the non-scientists are into sci-fi. That would fit in with what we are alluding to.

Many people like science fiction movies so that they can spot the things that make absolutely no sense or to see how many laws of physics can be broken in 90 mins. Who doesn't like to wag the finger of shame at StarTrek now and again? The Voyager episode where Paris and Janeway "devolve" in to salamander-things was truly awful. Most science fiction movies, like anything else in the world, suck. You need to dig to find the diamonds.

Science fiction movies, from my perspective, often start out great than steadily get worse as the story unfolds. Usually I'm disappointed afterwards. Also, science fiction is a common entry point for many people in to science - it was for me at least. But that was books, rather than film.

I rather prefer regular fiction to science fiction. What I really want to know is why so few scientist are into poetry, it's simply the greatest form of expression ever created by mankind.

I find it too infuriating when sci-fi films/programs clearly ignore fundamental laws. Things like star trek that I used to love when I was younger, I now find impossible to watch without tearing my hair out, and that of those around me.
