I'd say theoretical physicist. The word "hardest" is open to interpretation, so I took it to mean a combination of "least successful", "least productive" and "least popular". For example, how often does any government or corporation say, "We need to hire a theoretical physicist to solve this problem"? I see the limitation of theoretical physicists in their "theoretical" aspect, which is too abstract as compared, for example, to applied physicists or the other professions mentioned, which are useful in a broader spectrum of businesses.

I still think theoretical physicist because it's so abstract.

True, but there you have a doctor whos work is not only hard because of thinking, operating and stuff but because of the great responsibility that comes whit it....

That is a difficult question. I feel it all depends on the individual and their strengths and weeknesses, as well as their intelligence and abillity reason through a situation.
    Observance:
I worked in the refrigeration industry for 15 years and was accustomed to working in extreme enviroments and have seen good technicians not be able to perform due to the conditions on a job. Some couldn't concentrate on the task at hand when the conditions they were in preoccupied their train of thought and all they could think about was getting into more temperate conditions and the quality of their work suffered from the distraction.

This holds true for all occupations, not everybody is cut out to be a doctor, nor is everyone cut out to be a cheff, but there are people in every field who are good at and feel their profession is simple and others who feel it is too difficult and usually change professions to something that suits them more.
